Wreck-It Ralph sequel in the works
A sequel to the 2012 Disney animation hit Wreck-It Ralph is apparently in the works. According to Henry Jackman, composer of the first film, the sequel is in the early stages of development, although we have no official word from the studio yet. The reason it has yet to be announced could be due to the early stages of its development; feature studios usually explore many feature ideas and story lines before an official announcement is made, with most ideas never making it to the big screen. Wreck-It Ralph was in development for years before the idea for the film was finally re-imagined from scratch by director Rich Moore. In an interview with Collider, composer Henry Jackman says:
I can’t tell you more; not because I’m being coy, but I believe that it is officially on the cards. I don’t know any more other than a story is indeed being written.
The original film starring John C. Reilly as the Hulk-handed Ralph and Sarah Silverman as the cheeky Vanellope von Schweetz proved very popular on its release, grossing over $470 million at the box office, and finding a solid fan base with ease.
If the sequel is released theatrically it will be rarity for Disney studios, which historically steers clear of follow up films. The only film to get a second pass was The Rescuers sequel the Rescuers Down Under in 1990, and the only other characters to return in their own self titled sequel is Winnie the Pooh, who has have 5 feature releases – but only two finding their way onto the Disney classics list. Fantasia 2000 was released in 1999 of course, but it featured footage from the first film and was always intended to be an evolution of the first film as opposed to being a sequel.
There is no word on whether the sequel will be direct to DVD or theatrically released, but if Rich Moore is working on the film, it is a safe bet we will see it in theatres.
Disney recently announced sequels to its Pixar properties Incredibles 2 and Cars 3
