Wonky Films seek answer to the most ancient of questions in new animated short.
Wonky Films are appealing for aid in their quest to answer one of the most ancient questions known to man.
It isn’t whether the chicken came before the egg, or vice versa, Wonky Films are trying to find the answer to why the chicken crossed the road.
Working in conjunction with Peskimo Illustration, the Bristol based animation studio are putting together a website, Laugh Your Head Off, to produce short animation videos to bring jokes to life. They are kicking off the site with the first film, ‘Why did the Chicken Cross the Road?’ but hope to produce many more short animations to tell the stories behind the jokes.
As Miki Cash, creative director at Wonky states: “We’re hoping that if this film goes well it’ll be the first of many. There’s a whole host of talented people we’d love to collaborate with to build ‘Laugh Your Head Off’ into a top destination for funny content that’s lovingly animated.”
Vicky Brophy, head of production at Wonky told Animation News that “the film actually came out of a conversation I had with Jake out PhD student.”
Wonky are inviting the audience to get online and post their favourite jokes, but are also doing a spot of crowd funding in order to secure the funds to continue to produce the films. As Vicky explains, their PhD student, Jake, was very interested in crowd funding, so “developing the ‘Laugh Your Head Off’ site could grow into a big part of his studies. We’re all intrigued to see how people interact with the site and how many go on to actually help fund the first film.”
After getting the illustrations off Peskimo, it was down to film director, Daniel Binns to create the film. “We all loved Peskimo’s illustrations,” he told us. “My first challenge was to recreate the characters in 3D while maintaining their charm. After a couple of animation tests using Maya, I soon achieved a suitable paired back look that everyone, including Peskimo, was pleased with.”
The project is being done purely in their own time, and as such they are appealing to interested parties throughout the UK to buy in to the project and help them continue to do produce the series. Investors can expect to receive a limited edition poster as a return on their investment, as well as being invited to the films screening party. As Vicky surmises, “the more people who support the film the longer it will be… and the more fun the screening party will be when it’s completed.”
Wonky Films are a collective of local artists, animators, musicians and writers and are always looking for talented individuals to join the project.
