WATCH: The ‘2021 Golden Pencil Awards’ at the DRAWTASTIC Festival Free Online
Celebrating its 10th event anniversary the DRAWTASTIC Animation Festival has just announced it’s 2021 Golden Pencil Awards and wants you to see the online show (it’s third) for FREE throughout the rest of March.
The inaugural “DRAWTASTIC Animation Festival” was launched by Roy E. Disney at the Historic Theater in Everett, WA. In 2006. Initially known as the “2D OR NOT 2D Animation Festival” the festival is the brainchild of award-winning British traditional animator, author and teacher, Tony White. Legendary figures from the world animation who have appeared at the festival include Disney producer Don Hahn (twice), animation legend Richard Williams, three-times Oscar nominated Irish director, Tomm Moore, (with his Wolfwalkers co-director, Ross Stewart) and female Simpsons animator, Silvia Pompei – to name just a few. The pre-virtual festival went from strength to strength, eventually finding it’s home at the IMAX Theater in Seattle, before going virtual for its past three events.
The 2021 festival attracted films from over 16 countries with the final 1 hour 43 minute show including 2 “Honorable Mention” films, 10 “Finalist” films and 5 “Golden Pencil Award” winning films. For the first time a “Junior Golden Pencil Award” was offered to a 10 year old girl, Alice W. Botvinik, for her passionate commitment to animation. The entire recorded event is now available FREE throughout via the ANIMAKERS online community (www.animakers.club) – also founded by Tony White as a home of animation learning and sharing! Those wishing to view the 2021 event for free also get a 1-year complimentary membership of ANIMAKERS too. Existing members of the ANIMAKERS community – paying just $4.99 per year to do so – automatically have free access to the 2021 festival, as well as all future festivals freely and on-demand. This is in addition to other free animation courses and events that are available to ANIMAKERS members, including large additional discounts on other paid animation courses to be found there.
The DRAWTASTIC “Golden Pencil Award” festival has been years in the making, but Tony feels that it’s evolving online format is the finest way of providing indie animators from around the world a platform and showcase for their work – with special encouragement for the traditional hand-drawn animators among them.
