Sumo Science Break Another Animation Record
Following on from last year’s Nokia N8 spot ‘Dot’, which broke the world record for smallest stop-motion animation, directorial duo Sumo Science (Ed Patterson and Will Studd) recently teamed up with Aardman again to achieve the opposite with ‘Gulp’. The film was shot using the same mobile device, making use of the vast expanse of South Wales’s Pendine Beach as its canvass and proclaiming itself as the “world’s largest stop-motion animation”.

The film’s ambitious execution was realised through the pixilation of sand sculptures, raked patterns, props and a ‘human puppet’ telling the story of a fisherman in distress, shot sequentially as a series of JPEGs to demonstrate the N8’s photographic capabilities.
