Sony Pictures Animation Get Rights To Chickenhare

// News

It’s been announced today that Sony Pictures Animation has gained the filming rights to Chickenhare – a graphic novel written by Chris Grine that was published by Dark Horse comics in 2006.

Chickenhare follows the title character, who is half-chicken, half-hare, as he takes on a crazy journey to the underworld and back again, to rescue his best friend, Abe, a turtle with a spiffy goatee.  Along the way, he makes some very interesting friends: two mysterious creatures called Banjo and Meg, and Scabby, a small and furry (usually cave-dwelling) ‘Shromph’ that captains a boat, setting sail across the briny deep. The third installment is currently available to read online as a web-comic on the Chickenhare website.

There is currently no writer, director or cast attached to the project, but when we know who they’ll be, we’ll let you know. This is the second comic from Dark Horse to be optioned by Sony Pictures Animation, the first being the beautifully illustrated “Beasts of Burden” by Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson.

Grine graduated from Ringling school of Art and Design in 2000 and writes comic books for a living – as well as the highly successful Chickenhare series, he’s also drawn some very cool robots for his “165 Robots with Stuff” project over on Shoebox Blog.
