Simon’s Cat Gets His Claws Into Crowdfunding
For years Simon’s Cat has been the animated feline that makes us laugh in his attempts to get fed. But now, creator Simon Tofield is taking the series to a new level by creating a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. With over 3 million subscribers and over half a billion views, Simon’s Cat is without a doubt the most popular 2D, Black and White, Animated cat on the internet! So this seems like a great opportunity for the creators and the fans to work together and support each other on the new project – Off To The Vet.
So what’s so special about this new project? Well, it’s going to be 11 minutes long. Most Simon’s Cat episodes last roughly 2 – 3 minutes so this is big. Tofield along with Tandem Films and Frederator Network release 8 episodes a year and so hopefully this is a great opportunity for them to communicate with the fans just how precious and specific the animation process is. As well as that, Off To The Vet will also be the first colour short. Simon’s Cat is known for it’s very simple, black and white, line style animation and so it will be interesting to see how the project will works out in colour, it will certainly add an extra dimension to the short. Those who are big fans of the show will know that a tie in book was released by Tofield and Canongate Books Ltd titled Simon Cat Vs The World which was in glorious colour which gives us no doubt that a colour short would work brilliantly. In the IndieGoGo pitch video, we’ve seen a colour test preview which already gives a lot of hope to this new look to the short. Below, Tofield takes us through his colouring process.
Now if this hasn’t already got you jumping out of your seat with excitement, then the perks involved will. Like every crowdfunding campaign, the Simon’s Cat team are offering some great perks as a reward for helping fund the film. These include, a special preview of the finished short, various merchandising gifts such as T-shirts, Plushes, Collectable Cards as well as special Simon’s Cat art to show all your friends!
Simon’s Cat started out as just one simple short by an animator who wanted to learn flash and so produced the short named Cat Man Do. It is now in the top 150 most subscribed YouTube channels of all time, has won multiple awards, has more than 5 different books out, a comic strip in the Daily Mirror and so much more! It’s incredible to see the brand grow so much in just 6 years and it’s clear that this new short will mark an exciting direction for the Simon’s Cat animations.
