Wet & Soppy
What is the film about?
A weather-tormented man who just wants to dry his underwear is forced to use the local laundromat each evening.
What influenced it?
I was looking at a lot of 1960s illustration at the time, artists like the Chicago Imagists and Seymour Chwast as well as animation like Yellow Submarine. I really wanted each shot to feel almost like it could be an illustration, with the characters moving from pose to pose within the frame. I really like playing with the balance between very limited movements and full animation in my films.
A little background information...
The film was made as part of the Animation Studio Lab programme, supported by Animation Skillnet. I worked with a team of 13 people across Storyboard, Backgrounds, Animation and Compositing. We had access to a studio space with equipment and sessions with a group of industry mentors throughout the making of the film.
How was the film made?
I had about a month before production started to tie down the idea, design the characters and establish the style of the film. Then we worked with the team for about 8 weeks, with each stage of production overlapping within that. Storyboards and Backgrounds were done in Photoshop with Animation in TVPaint and Compositing in After Effects.
