“The Brave Heart” or (The day we enabled the sleepwalking protocol)”
What is the film about?
A brave heart takes a wild journey inside the body to try to sort out the problems of a hungover morning.
What influenced it?
- Sleepwalking biological mechanism
- Comedy and hero journey
- For the art direction of the film, our first inspiration came from the 60’s sci-fi design of the movie Fantastic Voyage (1966).
A little background information...
We were reading some books of Oliver Sacks and also other medical articles about the sleepwalking biological mechanism those days. So the idea of a body as a submarine vessel style machine comes to Luca’s mind (writer,co-director), where the inner world is isolated and mediates with the external world throughout tools/senses, and the crew(body organs) needs time to time make their independent decisions without the need of the body consciousness, in order to save the day. We wanted to make a comedy, make the audience having some genuine fun here while telling the story using the archetypical hero journey, where the hero travels into the underworld and face the dragon. So we took the hero’s journey very “seriously“ and try to make it epic.
How was the film made?
The film was independently self financed and made by artist/director duo Luca&Sinem.
It’s mainly based on 3D softwares. The characters are 3D generated and animated, rendered with a 2D stylised look. The backgrounds are digitally painted to maintain a brushy artistic look.
It took around 3 months of pre-production for the design and the animatic and around 1,5 year for the whole production. We received additional pro-bono helps from the sound designer and the music artist.
