What is the film about?

A photograph is a window into the past, but sometimes, the border between past and present is not entirely clear. This stop-motion animation invites us to think about our relationship to time, by portraying one woman caught in the middle.

What influenced it?

This film references still life paintings, like the work of Pieter Claesz, David Bailly and Henk Helmantel; but also broader influences like the work of Audrey Flack, Francisco de Zurbarán, Sam Taylor-Wood and Chantal Akerman.

A little background information...

This short film is inspired by my mother, an art historian and lover of still life paintings. It is also, in a way, a film about filmmaking itself, and the illusion of time we create. One life, depicted at two stages, in one, very short film, animated at 30 second intervals over nine hours.

How was the film made?

Replacement animation (of the cards) and pixilation (of the actress who comes in in the second half).
