My Story of Endometriosis
What is the film about?
Having been diagnosed with the debilitating condition endometriosis 5 years ago, through a multimedia and immersive experience using film and animation, the viewer can follow my journey with endo from pre-diagnosis until current day. Although only one of millions of women’s stories, the film and experience’s real aims are not only to aid the viewer in helping to understand the extreme pains and anxieties endometriosis sufferers go through every day, but also help in opening the well-needed conversations surrounding women’s gynaecological health, letting these women know they are not alone and pushing for more education on the subject.
What influenced it?
Inspired by motion graphic companies such as Peep Show, I wanted to reach for an outcome that included not only digital animation, but keep that hand drawn, frame by frame animation that first inspired me.
A little background information...
As an endo patient myself, I found a horrifying lack of awareness of this life changing condition despite the huge number of cases, with 1 in 10 women officially being diagnosed with endometriosis, making it as common as diabetes. I had such a fire inside me to create a film that echoed not only my experiences with endo and how it has affected my life, but to show that other sufferers are not alone and they can talk about it. As animation was a way of getting this message across, I wanted to create a film in my own domestic settings that would show my everyday life and also educate the viewer on what endo is and how it can be treated.
How was the film made?
A mixture of hand drawn frame by frame animation and digital animation in After Effects. With camera work and animations composited on top and some fully animated scenes, the film was a challenge in putting together using so many different techniques.
