Moi, Covidou
What is the film about?
Molly, 10 years old, imagines the life and death of the virus Covidou.
What influenced it?
My moodboard was mostly filled with screenshots of Yuri Ancari’s video ‘Da Vinci’ which was shown at the exhibition ‘Inside’ at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris years ago.
I really love how alien our own bodies can feel to us, how something so common appears so strange. The robot inside the body also has so much character, it’s going around living its life, cleaning up, doing some maintenance. I find it quite funny.
A little background information...
At the start of the lockdown, my 10 year old niece wrote a short story on the virus for a school assignment. I laughed so much when I read it, it felt like “everyone is talking about covid but who is thinking about his feelings huh?”. I really loved her funny and interesting perspective on the events. I decided to make an animation out of it. I asked her for feedback along the way and she took it very seriously, giving her opinions and thoughts on some aspects of the film. It was great.
How was the film made?
I designed and drew the film frame by frame on Photoshop, animated the cells on After Effects and it was all then pimped up by Edward Bulmer for a final beauty touch. I also got two very good friends involved for the sound design and music, Iannis Spanos and ClĂ©ment Claude. It was great to work on creating a bubbly texture for Covidou, trying to imagine what a virus’ texture could feel like but also to nail the music tone. It had to be somewhere between strange and familiar, alien and little halloweeney monster. Everyone was very engaging in the project and did a fantastic work.
