Library of Paradise, Garden of Pain
What is the film about?
In a luscious garden, a sickly man is cared for by a group of strange librarians.
What influenced it?
David Inshaw’s surreal landscape paintings. The library near my childhood home. Health problems. Scans. Bruegel.
A little background information...
I’ve become interested in depicting collective groups of people in
utopian settings. In this film, it’s a community of librarians who care for an ill man. By depicting these communal, supportive groups of characters, I wish to move away from the world ‘as it is’ and explore
the world ‘as it could be’. As we live in a capitalist society that both encourages us to identify only as individuals, and discourages us from collective action and solidarity, these feel like interesting subjects to explore.
How was the film made?
I draw replacement puppets onto paper with ink and oil pastel. I then scan them onto a computer and composite in After Effects.
