Jack Astro
What is the film about?
The film follows the exploits of Jack Astro who is traversing the Galaxy claiming planets for “The Federation” with his trusty flags. Jack finds that some planets and their inhabitants are easier claimed than others. The 3 minute 2d animated film weaves between moments of quiet comedy and blistering action packed fun and beneath the cartoon mayhem you will find a simple story of environmentalism.
What influenced it?
Most direct influences would be: Matt Groening, Ralph Bakshi, Bill Plympton, Patrick Smith, Doug Tennapel, Phillip K Dick.
A little background information...
Doug says the film started as a reaction to his day job in pre-school animation. He felt the desire to create something for himself that would be enjoyable to work on and hopefully also to watch. There are so many limitations imposed upon stories for kids that are complete nonsense. It was refreshing to make something for myself and not worry about who the audience would be. I can imagine kids would probably enjoy the film, it is a little edgy but I wanted it to be suitable for all ages.
How was the film made?
Animated in Toonboom this was created around a full-time production job. Drawn digitally on a Samsung Slate Tablet P.C.
