IT Came From Beyond the Drain
What is the film about?
A man and his dog must defend themselves from a creature that erupts from beneath their kitchen sink.
What influenced it?
I grew up watching the 1950’s giant monster movies and drew inspiration from them. Everything from the creature design to the music; anyone familiar with those films will see their influence sprinkled throughout DRAIN. If you look at all my recent short films, I think it’s pretty clear that I enjoy taking an existing genre and putting my own stop motion spin on it. It can be a tricky balancing act because there is always the danger that the film will end up being completely derivative. It’s very satisfying that, after 2 years in the making; the finished film seems to have hit the mark.
A little background information...
I spent the last 10 years making short films that have gotten progressively darker in tone. I finally reached a point where I felt the need to do something lighter and DRAIN is the result. I wanted to tell a story that was completely visual, that didn’t rely on dialogue. It turned out to be a very rewarding experience and one that opened the film up to a much wider audience.
How was the film made?
I work alone. It took 2 years to complete this film. The first year was spent creating all the puppets and props along with recording the voices, drawing storyboards and cutting the animatic. 9 months of animation followed. 3 months of post production picture and sound editing along with music composition and recording resulted in what you now see here.
