Frank’s Joke
What is the film about?
Frank told a joke at work. Nobody laughed. Now at 3am he’s unable to sleep as he obsesses over his social faux-pas, leading him to contemplate the nature of memory itself.
What influenced it?
Peep Show, The Office, Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” film, Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
A little background information...
The film was commissioned as part “Animate 18” by BBC4 and the BFI in 2018. I wanted to make a film that explored the nature of memory via a character stuck in a loop of obsession and anxiety.
How was the film made?
The film is a mix of live-action puppetry and hand drawn animation. We shot the puppets over the course of a week with an amazing crew (luckily the NFTS were kind enough to lend us a spare stage) and then I spent the next couple of months animating the facial expressions over the top, whilst Pablo Scopinaro worked on the jazz score that drives the film’s pacing.
