Dilettante
What is the film about?
This is an animated lyric video for the song Dilettante by The Lonely Harps Club. The song is about having fun with your friends, even if you don’t fit into the narrow boxes created by society. Illustrating the song’s themes of adventure and creativity, the video uses a typewriter as a framing device to take the viewer inside bedrooms in various global cities, stopping along the way to drink wine and discuss pension plans (or lack of thereof).
What influenced it?
Artistic influences include Drew Milward, Bu Hua, Cai Caibei, Julian Opie and AG Rojas.
Another big influence on the atmosphere of the video is the lofi/chill hop vibe that has been popular in 2020 and 2021, even though the song does not fit into that genre musically.
A little background information...
“Dilettante” is animated by Isabel Galwey of the Greenwood Studio. The song is written by Julia Mascetti and Arthur Reji Morris and is released under the artist name, “The Lonely Harps Club.”
Releasing music has been difficult during the pandemic and, as live gigs aren’t possible, Julia felt an energetic song about friendship needed something more than just to be tossed online without ceremony, so she began to think of ways the themes of the song could be communicated through animation.
How was the film made?
Julia and Isabel are childhood friends, but Isabel now lives in Hong Kong. From concept and storyboarding to the finishing touches, the making of this film involved a lot of Zoom calls and late night/early morning messaging. Given that travel is a key theme of the song, it seems appropriate that Julia and Isabel worked together across two continents on this project.
