Before the Sun (Mairena)
What is the film about?
Music video for the third single of the Brazilian artist’s debut album in English. Inspired by the cosmic themes in the lyrics, the animation takes us on a journey across the galaxy and reflects on humanity’s scary prospect of having to abandon Earth and search for a fresh start in a new planet.
What influenced it?
The project started with strong Terry Gilliam influences, hence the character’s stiff joints. But as it grew epic in narrative, influences started to shift to pre-moon landing sci-fi, with an edge of naivety and a blurred line between science fiction and fantasy genres.
A little background information...
“An animator walks into a pub..”. Sounds like the setup for a joke, but that’s how it actually started. After meeting the musician in a pub, ideas started to bounce between the two artists, and the space exploration theme resonated to both. The collapsing world around us certainly did play a part in the grim theme.
How was the film made?
90% of the images used came from NASAs archive database. This meant a vast material, yet limiting at the same time. Often creative choices had to be reimagined to fit the available material, resulting at times in pleasant unexpected results. All was then brought to After After effects for animation and compositing. Finally, hand drawn details were added throughout to ease the over-digital look.
