Sex, Polish Animation & A Preview Of Kinoteka 2014
If you’re feeling a little saturated by all the animated Hollywood family films that seem to surround us at this time of year, and if you’re hungry for something a little more cultural in the coming month, then the KINOTEKA Polish Film Festival may be just what you are looking for. The festival takes place between the 24th April and 30th May 2014, across many locations in London. The festival celebrates Polish cinema, music, visual arts and, of course, animation. This year there are a number of animation related screenings and events which we have plucked out of the full programme, and have detailed below:
Sex in the Polish Socialist Republic
Sex in the Polish Socialist Republic is a programme of Polish animation shorts from the Communist period about sex and intimacy. The screening takes place on the 12 May (6.30pm) at the Barbican (Cinema 3), and will be introduced by Nag Vladermersky, director of London International Animation Festival.
This screening will offer a fascinating and insightful look at sex behind the Iron Curtain with works by Julian Józef Antoniusz, Andrzej Czeczot, Piotr Dumała and Alexander Sroczyński amongst others.
You can book your tickets from the Barbican website here.
Walerian Borowczyk
The work of artist and filmmaker Walerian Borowczyk forms the backbone of this year’s festival programme with a major retrospective celebrating his prolific body of work focusing on his artwork, early shorts, ground breaking animation and live-action features, many of which have been rarely or previously unseen in the UK. There are two strands that celebrate Borowczyk’s work:
- Walerian Borowczyk: The Listening Eye – Between 20th May and 29th June, there will be exhibitions and screenings at the ICA Fox Reading Room. Taking centre stage is Borowczyk’s 1964 animation, Les Jeux des Anges. For more information, visit the ICA website.
- Cinema of Desire: Films of Walerian Borowczyk at BFI – The BFI are hosting a month of events and films from 1st – 27th May. One of the highlights is sure to be the screening on the last night (27th May), comparing the work of Bob Godfrey and Borowczyk. Tickets are available here.
Quay Brothers premiere two short films
The closing night of KINOTEKA 2014 will feature the Closing Night Concert, which takes place on 30th May. Produced by the Barbican, the concert will premiere two short films by artist filmmakers/animators the Quay Brothers with live soundtrack provided by the legendary Arditti Quartet. The Gala will UK premiere the Quay Brothers latest short film Kwartet Smyczkovy, and the critically acclaimed In Absentia, taking existing musical compositions for their inspiration.
Skwigly will be there, and we hope to see you, too!
