Registration for the 7th Edition of the Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards is Now Open
The Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards have opened the registration period for works for its seventh edition. The awards ceremony will take place on May 11 next year at the Teatro Leal in the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife, with the main dates of this 7th edition being May 9, 10 and 11, 2024. Created in 2018, the Quirino Awards seek to enhance the value of the Ibero-American talent and animation industry, in addition to promoting professional networks on both sides of the Atlantic and contributing to the construction of an Ibero-American animation market.
The works submitted will compete in seven main categories: Feature Film, Series, Short Film, School Short Film, Commissioned Film, Video Game Animation and, this year for the first time, Music Video. Starting with this edition, this category has been added in recognition of creators who have expanded the frontiers of animation by interacting with other art disciplines. The finalists in the main categories will also compete in three technical categories: Visual Development, Animation Design, and Sound Design and Original Music.
The call is aimed at works with a majority production from one of the 23 Ibero-American countries. In the case of feature films, series and video game animations, the works must have been released between June 1, 2022 and December 31, 2023, while in the rest of the categories only works released during 2023 will be accepted. Works must be registered through the Festhome platform before December 14, 2023 at 23:59 (Spanish time). Rules for participation are available at this link.
A Selection Committee will choose six nominees per category from among all the works submitted, which will be announced in mid-February 2024. Subsequently, an International Jury will select three finalists per category, and these will compete for the awards to be given at the ceremony to be held on May 11 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
Portuguese animation was the star of the latest edition of the Quirino Awards, winning four of the nine awards, including Best Feature Film (“Nayola” by José Miguel Ribeiro) and Best Short Film (“Garbage Man” by Laura Gonçalves). The award for Best Series went to the Spanish film “Jasmine & Jambo” by Silvia Cortés. Last year’s finalists were selected from among 223 submissions from 18 countries.
In addition to recognizing the best Ibero-American animation works, from May 9 to 11 the Quirino Awards will host the Co-Production and Business Forum, created with the aim of promoting the co-production, development and circulation of Ibero-American animation works and projects. With the participation of 148 companies from 26 countries, more than 1,200 professional meetings were organized last year—70% more than the previous year—between production companies, distributors, sales agencies, TV channels and streaming platforms.
Quirino around the world
Since its first edition in 2018, the Quirino Awards have become a benchmark platform for promoting Ibero-American animation and the meeting of professionals from the region. During the past year, the event’s organization participated in the international festivals and meetings of Annecy (France), Pixelatl (Mexico), Animation! Ventana Sur (Argentina), APA Lab (Argentina), Forum da Animaçao (Portugal & Brazil), Festa Mundial da Animação (Portugal), TAL Awards (Latam) and CONDIA (Brazil), among others.
In addition, the Quirino Awards are part of La Liga de la Animación Iberoamericana (The Ibero-American Animation League)—together with the Pixelatl festival (Mexico) and Animation! Ventana Sur (Argentina)—, an alliance conceived to promote projects from the region internationally. The winning project of La Liga’s fifth edition was the feature film “Cleo y la selva mágica” by Estefanía Piñeres, produced by Letrario (Colombia). Thanks to the support of this alliance, the project participated in the Quirino, Annecy, and Pixelatl Awards.
Among other activities developed throughout the year, the Quirino Awards participated for the second time as collaborators in the Mentoring Program for Latin American Female Creators of Animation! Ventana Sur, in which five female directors receive advice on production, script and pitching. All the projects selected in the third edition of this program—the Colombian “Cora en el mundo desconocido” by Adriana Sánchez, the Mexican “Kolaval” by Karla Velázquez (TresOlas), the Brazilian “Kale, Museum of Spookiness” by Lena Franzz (Studio Chifrezz) and “Pizza Delivery” by Luah Garcia (Cactus Kid Studio), and the Argentine “Quién soy” by Karina Yanel Segovia (Artan Animation)—had the chance to participate in the B2B meetings of the Quirino Co-Production and Business Forum, while “Kale, Museum of Spookiness” was chosen to be presented at MIFA Annecy 2022. These projects will also be presented at the next edition of Animation! Ventana Sur, which will take place from November 27 to December 1 in Buenos Aires.
