“Plasticine Rhythm” by Andy Martin
Plasticine Rhythm is the new short film by Strange Beast animator and director Andy Martin. Over the last six months Andy has created short videos playing with rhythm, motion and morphing in stop motion animation using the vine app. The loops are framed into miniature retro TVs and combined into one film tied together by the score created by Andy himself. The film plays with the notion of sound and imagery and how the two interact to create something beautiful and hypnotic to watch.
I have always been interested in the way visuals can effect sound and how visual loops can be brought together to create a piece of music. This is how I produced Plasticine Rhythm; allowing each stop motion loop, made using Vine, to dictate a sound and combining these sound loops on screen to build a compatible interplay of rhythm and melody.

Andy, in association with Strange Beast, was invited to lead a workshop at this year’s Pick Me Up festival at Somerset House in London. The brilliant workshop offered attendees the opportunity to have a go at creating loops similar to the ones in the film, creating a companion piece to Plasticine Rhythm. Below is a short film showing the workshop in full swing.
As well as this he has also created a making-of film that talks you through the steps of creating your own claymation loop. You can even download the accompanying music, also created by Andy.
Plasticine Rhythm was initially created alongside his other short film The Planets, which was created over twelve months and documents twelve planets (one for each month) of Andy’s imagination into one film, which is now embarking on the festival tour.
This incredibly busy and and prolific animator recently spoke and presented two short films at this years Pictoplasma’s Character Design Festival which was celebrating its 10th Anniversary. His short film Selfie created for the Character Selfie project and I am a… for the Character Portrait Exhibition (which was also chosen as a Vimeo Staff Pick)
