The film, animated in stop-motion using the latest in 3D ‘powder’ printer technology, tells the story of unwilling medium Norman (Kodi Smit-McPhee) whose ability to speak with the dead sees him isolated from his family and schoolyard peers. Written by Chris Butler (who also directed the film alongside ‘The Tale of Despereux’ director Sam Fell), the characterisation of the main character was drawn from his real-life childhood:
“I didn’t like school, hated it, didn’t quite fit in. If I’d been more popular I wouldn’t have made this movie now. Norman is me, basically, and his way of dealing with not fitting in is just to get on with his life. He’s not a victim, he doesn’t cry about it, he just tries not to draw attention to himself.”
Also boasting the voice talents of John Goodman, Casey Affleck and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, ‘ParaNorman’ will be released in the UK September 14th. You can find out more on their official website.
