Oscars 2022: Animation wins for ‘Encanto’ and ‘The Windshield Wiper’ + director interviews
The 94th Academy Awards, a notably uneventful edition that took place last night at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, saw Disney’s Encanto repeat its recent BAFTA success with a win for Best Animated Feature whilst Alberto Mielgo’s The Windshield Wiper walked home with Best Animated Short.

Animated Feature winner Encanto was up against the stiff competition of FLEE (Jonas Poher Rasmussen, Monica Hellström, Signe Byrge Sørensen and Charlotte De La Gournerie), Luca (Enrico Casarosa and Andrea Warren), Skwigly readers’ poll topper The Mitchells Vs. The Machines (Mike Rianda, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Kurt Albrecht) and Raya and the Last Dragon (Don Hall, Carlos López Estrada, Osnat Shurer and Peter Del Vecho).
You can hear our recent interviews with Encanto‘s directors Jared Bush and Charise Castro Smith as well as producer Clark Spencer in episode 104 of the Skwigly Animation Podcast.

The 2022 Animated Short Film winner The Windshield Wiper was similarly among some hard-to-beat, top-tier work, with fellow nominees including Skwigly readers’ pick Affairs of the Art (Joanna Quinn and Les Mills), Bestia (Hugo Covarrubias and Tevo Díaz), Boxballet (Anton Dyakov) and Robin Robin (Dan Ojari and Mikey Please).
Director Alberto Mielgo joined us in the most recent episode of the Skwigly podcast series Intimate Animation earlier this month to discuss the project and his career to date.
