Oscar wins for “Rango” and “Morris Lessmore”
It’s the end of another Oscar season and the nominees are doubtless breathing a little easier this morning, regardless of the outcome.
Gore Verbinski’s “Rango” won for Best Animated Feature, beating out “Puss in Boots” (Chris Miller), “A Cat in Paris” (Alain Gagnol, Jean-Loup Felicioli), “Kung Fu Panda 2” (Jennifer Yuh Nelson) and
“Chico & Rita” (Fernando Trueba, Javier Mariscal).
The competition was especially stiff in the Short Film category, with two NFB films “Dimanche/Sunday” (Patrick Doyon) and “Wild Life” (Amanda Forbis, Wendy Tilby) in the running next to Enrico Casarosa’s “La Luna” and UK-based Studio AKA’s “A Morning Stroll” (Grant Orchard). The winner however was William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg’s “The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore”, a film which last year made tremendous strides in cross-platform marketing with its hugely popular associated iPad app.
During their acceptance speech Joyce remarked “We’re just these two swamp rats from Louisiana and this is incredibly grand. We love the movies more than anything, it’s been a part of our lives since we were both kids. There are thousands of men and women since the beginning of cinema that have inspired us and movies that moved us more than we ever knew you could be moved. And it’s everything we try to do every day is to honor those people and those films.”
