Matt Groening reveals details for his new Netflix show ‘Disenchantment’
Details for Simpsons and Futurama creator Matt Groening’s new animated sitcom have been revealed. After details of a deal between Netflix and the veteran cartoonist were unveiled last year more detail on the show have been announced.
Disenchantment will see Groening and co take on the world of fantasy and follow the adventures of “hard-drinking” Princess Bean (Abbi Jacobson), elven companion Elfo (Nat Faxon) and Bean’s personal demon Luci (Eric Andre). The trio will encounter staples of the fantasy genre including imps, orcs, trolls and harpies.
“Ultimately, Disenchantment will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you.”
Simpsons and Futurama staples John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille and David Herman whilst Jeny Batten, Rich Filcher, join UK comedians Matt Berry, Noel Fielding and Lucy Montgomery in the cast.
Josh Weinstein joins Groening as exec producer on the show. Weinstein’s pedigree includes The Simpsons and Futurama as well as Gravity Falls, UK puppet sitcom Strange Hill High and recently Danger Mouse. The animation will be produced by Rough Draft Studios.
Whilst The Simpsons tackled the family sitcom and Futurama took on the science fiction genre, both have dabbled in fantasy in the past, most prominently in the Futurama movie Bender’s Game where the Planet Express crew were transported to an epic Dungeons and Dragons setting. Netflix have been steadily building their animation portfolio for years to great success and it would appear including Disenchantment onto its playlist offer a promise of further success, we shall see when the show premieres on Netflix in 2018.
