Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre‘s first NFB co-production Jutra will be joining the lineup of the 46th Directors’ Fortnight at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival. The Directors’ Fortnight takes place May 15th–25th, 2014.

The film, an animated documentary which explores the life and work of Mon Oncle Antoine director and A Chairy Tale co-director (with Norman McLaren) Claude Jutra, has been executed through the painstaking assembly of animation and archival footage of the filmmaker himself. Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre, a Concordia University graduate, founded MJSTP Films in 2004 and has since built up an impressive, award-winning filmography including Passages, McLaren’s Negatives and The Sapporo Project.

Jutra will also feature on the Not Short on Talent program created by Danny Lennon for Telefilm Canada and Hot Docs, the Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto from April 24–May 4, 2014.

An original mix of animation and documentary, Jutra by Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre juxtaposes the two genres to push the boundaries of filmmaking. As such, it aptly illustrates how the NFB, on the eve of its 75th anniversary, continues to serve as a creative space where parallel worlds and uncommon visions can find their place and flourish.

– Claude Joli-Cśur, Acting Government Film Commissioner and Chairperson of the National Film Board of Canada
