Google’s latest in their series of logo ‘doodles’ pays homage to cartoonist and animation pioneer Winsor McCay with “Little Nemo In Google-Land”

The interactive strip is drawn in the style of McCay’s legendary creation “Little Nemo In Slumberland” and sees the titular character plunging through a beautifully observed animated dreamscape. Today celebrates the 107th anniversary of the comic’s debut.

McCay is known as one of animation’s most noteworthy pioneers, with his creation “Gertie The Dinosaur” widely acknowledged as the first ever animated cartoon character. Other noteworthy contributions to the medium include “The Sinking of the Lusitania” and “The Flying House”, which was recently the subject of a controversial restoration project led by Bill Plympton.

The ‘Google Doodles’ series has been alive since 2000 and to date over 1000 have been produced to mark special occasions, holidays and noteworthy anniversaries. As well as today’s homage, other animated versions of the logo have include tributes to Art Clokey, Martha Graham (by animator Ryan Woodward), John Lennon and the 80’s cultural institution Pac-Man.
