Fantoche reveals film selection for 2023 edition
From 5-10 September, the 21st edition of FANTOCHE International Animation Film Festival is set to screen the latest feature films and special programmes with a focus on specific countries and themes – namely, “Punk Is Not Dead” and an insight into animated filmmaking from South Korea. This year, once again, the core of the festival is the eight competition programmes vying for 14 prizes in total in the International, Swiss and Kids Film Competition categories. This edition will also see the Flying Anidoc award presented for the first time.
Two Swiss entries in International Competition
A treat lies in store for audiences and judging panels alike: the Fantoche selection team has chosen 61 animated short films from a total of 2703 submissions. The International Competition will see 25 films vie for five prizes (Best Film, High Risk, New Talent, Best Sound and the Audience Award). Switzerland is represented in the International Competition by two entries: Alvaro Schoeck and Charlotte Waltert’s “Greylands” and Elodie Dermange’s “Armat”.

Punk, South Korea and game design in the spotlight
In this year’s festival focus “Punk Is Not Dead”, curators Greg de Cuir Jr, Daniel Šuljić and Olga Bobrowska investigate what links the rebellious punk movement of the 1970s and 1980s with the current protests and to what extent protest, provocation and refusal to conform become an animated visual language of resistance.
To mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Switzerland, Fantoche is also putting South Korean animation in the spotlight. Four themed short film programmes and features “My Beautiful Girl, Mari” (awarded the 2002 Annecy Grand Prix) and mystery horror animation “Climbing” are set to highlight the special qualities of the nation’s animated film industry – which is often said mainly to channel its talents and resources into games production.
In recent years, the country’s gaming industry has produced global hits combining the art of animation with game design. Game developers from Switzerland and worldwide are focusing on the potential of this interplay.
The full programme will be published on the 14th of August.
