Encounters Festival 2013 to Feature Richard Williams Retrospective
In partnership with the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Encounters will be bringing the much-celebrated animation legend Richard Williams to Bristol for this year’s edition.
With a career spanning such milestones as The Charge Of The Light Brigade (Tony Richardson, 1968) Return Of The Pink Panther (Blake Edwards, 1975) and the live-action/animation fusion Who Framed Roger Rabbit (Robert Zemeckis, 1988), Williams is also a household name in the animation community for his must-own tome The Animator’s Survival Kit and accompanying lecture series The Animator’s Survival Kit Animated.
“I love working in Bristol which, because of Aardman, has become an international centre for animation” Says Williams. “Now that I’m 80 I’m delighted Encounters are celebrating my work with a retrospective programme and other events which will sit alongside films by young talents.”
Encounters will present three special presentations centered around Williams and his laudable body of work:

“Marking 25 years since the release of this groundbreaking work, Encounters will open this year’s festival with a special (digitally re-mastered) screening of the film. Often credited with kick-starting the modern age of animated feature films this pioneering work combines the live action footage from Robert Zemeckis and Richard Williams’ animation to make a fresh and timeless classic that changed the world of animation for the better. Richard Williams will introduce this screening.”

“Richard Williams will present a retrospective of his work on Thursday 19th September. This screening charts Richard’s career development and highlights, revealing the unrivalled excellence of his work and his legacy for British Animation, featuring short films interspersed with a selection of memorable and ground breaking commercial work. Many of his best known works plus some very rare surprises can be seen here. If time allows there will also be a short question and answer session at the end. Among the films shown will be The Little Island and Love Me, Love Me, Love Me.”
