‘Do Not Track: The Spy In My Pocket’ – An Interactive Animated Documentary
Following their prior collaboration on the NFB/EyeSteelFilm documentary RiP! A Remix Manifesto, director Brett Gaylor and animator Darren Pasemko have teamed up again for The Spy In My Pocket, the first animated episode of the NFB’s interactive, seven-part documentary web series Do Not Track.
Presented and written by independent journalist Zineb Dryef, the film was animated using Adobe Creative Suite taking its visual cues from public information films of the 1960s, as well as animated Sesame Street segments. Detailing how smartphones collect and distribute personal information, the episode also features insight from web experts Harlo Holmes, software developer for the Guardian Project, and Rand Hindi, data scientist and founder of Snips.
The seven-part Do Not Track series, a co-production of the NFB, Arte, Bayerischer Rundfunk and Upian, intends to shed light on an issue that effects the billions of web users the world over, of how our activity while online is closely monitored, collected and sold. The interactive component of the documentary gives viewers the opportunity to observe in real-time how their online ID is tracked once they have submitted their personal data. Each episode is set up to become increasingly tailored to its viewer based on the information provided, to create a clear sense of how tracking works. The series, which began last month, will continue to launch new episodes between now and June 9th exploring a number of facets of online data collection.
