The Yule Log is back! Kick back with your hot toddy and prop your feet up by your monitor as the crackling sparks of inspiration from 80 artists consumes this year’s Yule Log. The brainchild of Daniel Savage, Yule Log 2.0 and now with version 2.014, it looks like we are set for a digital holiday tradition. in addition to website support from Wondersauce, Savage invited OddFellows to curate this year’s selection.

I asked him about how the project has grown since last year:

What was the idea behind bringing OddFellows onboard and what was their role on the project specifically?
They showed interest in helping out, I really respect their work and thought a fresh take on getting new artists from their network would be great. So they sent out the invites, managed the artists and got all the films in on time, among other things. They also worked with the sound designers Marmoset (https://www.marmosetmusic.com/), if you listen carefully theres a mix of random sound bites over the fire, like owls and bells, it’s a nice touch.

2) What was the inspiration behind your own underwater Yule Log (which is one of my favorites, btw)?
Thank you! The digital fish tank screen savers always crack me up, and feel like the off-season Yule Log.

3) Where do you see the Yule Log going in years to come? (I wonder what Yule Log 2.500 will be!)
I definitely want it to keep growing, I’ve tossed around the idea of a jury in some capacity. Viacom licensed the logs to loop in their lobby, so we are donating the $2k fee to an organization called C/I (http://www.weare.ci/) I think finding more ways like this to give back, aside from entertaining everyone’s eyeballs, would be great. Time will tell.

#AdventAnimation is a daily showcase of holiday themed animation. If you are working on something with a touch of holiday cheer that will be released sometime between 1 December and Christmas Eve, drop me a note and I will put it into consideration.
