Advent Animation 2014 – Dec 3: Snowman vs. Doily (Anna Humphries)
The delicate papercraft of Michele Ocelot’s The Three Inventors has always been one of my all time favorites. So when I saw Anna Humphries animated nod to the film, I was delighted!
I love how inspiration trickles down through the eras. Ocelot was inspired by German silhouette animator, Lotte Reiniger. Today’s vast stylistic diversity of paper craft animation began with one bold woman in the 1920s!
Anna gives us a little insight into the production and the upcoming season.
Interesting moment, fact or point of inspiration from your production:
I was really inspired after Michel Ocelot’s talk at Animafest in Romania 2013, I really love decorative styles and thought the paper doily idea was genius! They also lend themselves to steampunk style machines quite well, which I also love. Bought hundreds of them from eBay and had a good old cutting session. I found the doilys great to work with, because some times you just see new shapes in the different patterns and it gives you ideas. The story, as always is the hardest thing to get right. Nobody got the first edit I showed to my friends so I had to cut out most of it all over again!
I created an animation company with my partner Jon earlier this year, and we haven’t gone under yet! In fact, it’s all going pretty well. Check out www.infocandy.co.uk
Most animated holiday party you’ve been to (literally or figuratively):
Do animators get invited to holiday parties? I usually spend the Christmas party season under my desk with a bottle of Captain Morgans.
What’s one thing you are looking forward to in the new year?
Not renewing my gym membership.
#AdventAnimation is a daily showcase of holiday themed animation. If you are working on something with a touch of holiday cheer that will be released sometime between 1 December and Christmas Eve, drop me a note and I will put it into consideration.
