Advent Animation 2014 – Dec 17: Redesigning Christmas (Torill Kove)
Have you ever wanted to take your artistic hand to the kitsch of Christmas?
Following her delightful short Me and My Moulton, animator Torill Kove revisit’s her quirky family history in a new clip just for Christmas. With trademark, understated humor, Kove reveals how her architecturally inclined parents rework the Christmas traditions to suit their modern tastes.
Thanks to Torill Kove for answering a few questions for Skwigly readers:
Interesting moment, fact or point of inspiration from your production:
I have very mixed feelings about Christmas decorations. I can’t quite decide if I love them or strongly dislike them. My parents favoured “natural” decorations from wood, straw and paper. There was a house rule against glitter. My first Christmas tree away from home was covered in glitter. I’m apparently quite conflicted about it.
What special holiday treat would you bring to an Animator’s Holiday Party?:
Probably “gravelaks”: salmon marinated in salt, sugar, dill and Aquavit.
One favorite holiday memory from your childhood?
Making homemade marzipan candy from scratch with my mom. They were so beautiful, like mini food sculptures.
What’s one thing you are looking forward to in the new year?
Spending the summer in Norway.
