Call for Volunteers: Bob Godfrey Animation Archive
The University for the Creative Arts’ Archives, Farnham, Surrey is putting a call out for interested volunteers to help look after and promote the archive of this internationally acclaimed Animator. Bob Godfrey (1921-2013) was Britain’s first Oscar Winning Animator for Animation in 1975 with Great, which looked at the lives and times of Isambaard Kingdom Brunel. He started off life as a graphic design artist in the 1930s, and eventually forming Bob Godfrey Films in 1965. His animation methods included traditional cel animation, cut out drawings, magazine images and felt markers on white animation paper. As well as intriguing in animation methods, his work is of interest for social history, with themes including censorship, misogyny and marketing, branding, children’s animation, book adaption and politics.
UCA holds on deposit over 400 boxes of animation acetate cels, storyboards, correspondence and photographs, and traces the beginnings to the end of the process. Help we are looking for in the first instance includes preservation, and assessing the number and needs of different formats, and listing records.
This should be of interest to anyone interested in developing their archival skills, or interested in Animation, Film, Fine Art, Graphic Design and the history of art.
Hours are flexible and we can provide tea, coffee and biscuits (just not with the archives!)
