// News

At a press conference live-streamed yesterday, the Toronto International Film Festival revealed its first wave of new work that will see a premiere at their 2017 edition.
Among the 25 announced features was the highly-anticipated upcoming Cartoon Saloon offering The Breadwinner.

The film will join a live-action heavy line-up set to comprise 14 Galas and 33 Special Presentations. The festival’s ‘future is female’ remit will see The Breadwinner director Nora Twomey joining other international female directors such as Dee Rees, Susanna White, Haifaa al-Mansour and Deniz Gamze Ergüven.

The Breadwinner is based on the internationally acclaimed young adult novel of the same name by Canadian author Deborah Ellis, adapted for the screen by Anita Doron.

The film is being produced by Aircraft Pictures, Cartoon Saloon and Melusine Productions with producers Tomm Moore and Paul Young of Cartoon Saloon (The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea), Anthony Leo and Andrew Rosen of Aircraft Pictures and Stephan Roelants of Melusine Productions.

The Breadwinner is the story of Parvana, a young girl living under the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, who must disguise herself as a boy and become the breadwinner of the family when her father is unfairly imprisoned
