Blood, Guts & Gore in Outer Space – NFTS Digital Effects MA
The NFTS Digital Effects MA is unique in giving its students a hands-on, practical filmmaking experience alongside a comprehensive digital learning programme in the all-new DFX studios. Every year, the second year students work on a prosthetics short film exercise called Gorefest and this year they took to outer space with a full-on spaceship built on the NFTS main stage.
The DFX students began the project studying at Gorton Studio, Europe’s first specialist prosthetics and make-up FX school, where they learned the required techniques to create the prosthetic effects needed for the Gorefest shoot.
To give the DFX students a real-world feel of what it’s like to work as a team under direction from a third party, Gorton Studio sister company, Millennium FX, Europe’s biggest screen prosthetics business, come up with a concept for each year’s Gorefest and provide the director. The concept of the short, entitled The Mayflower, came from Millennium FX founder Neill Gorton and the director was NFTS Digital Effects MA graduate and Millennium FX Concept Artist, Chris Goodman: “Gorefest is a great way of giving the DFX students an understanding of how prosthetics blend with DFX. It’s a great opportunity for everyone involved including me! It’s fantastic to make a short with students who are so passionate and talented; Gorefest is a toy box with all the bells and whistles you can think of. Anyone who loves film would kill for this opportunity. It’s really exciting!”
Production Design MA students design and build the set; Screenwriting MA students edit the script; Cinematography MA students shoot the film (and this year benefitted from a set lighting masterclass from the legendary NFTS alumnus, multiple Oscar nominee, Roger Deakins). Composing MA students write the score and the final film benefits from input from Sound Design and Editing MA students.
Digital effects are everywhere – from Hollywood blockbusters and online content, to commercials, television programmes, games and independent movies. The NFTS Digital Effects MA gives students extensive, practical training on real sets, in a visual effects and animation studio and in cutting-edge digital post suites. Students are taught essential 2D and 3D VFX and SFX techniques and will go on to specialise in either compositing, colour or CG 3D. They will work with the latest software applications and digital camera technology and are taught by artists, technicians and supervisors currently working in the industry.
