Bristol Festival of Puppetry 2015 – Animation Highlights
Next week sees the start of the 2015 Bristol Festival of Puppetry, a celebration of puppet craft, culture, performance and film organised by Puppet Place. This year is set to be the biggest yet for the festival, with events spanning multiple venues across the city. Skwigly look ahead to some of the festival’s upcoming animation-centric highlights:
27th August
Brothers Quay Retrospective
The Bristol Festival of Puppetry invites audiences to a screening of the works of the Quay Brothers, followed by a rare opportunity to hear the pair in conversation with BFP15 Film Curator Joseph Wallace. The Brothers Quay have also put together a special installation at the Control Room on Redcliffe Bastille Bridge which will be in place from August 27th to September 18th.

Workshop: DIY Animation for Kids & Young People
A workshop full of fun and mischief. Inspired by the Bristol Festival of Puppetry‘s screenings for families, Claire Evans from Small World Animations will help bring your characters to life on film.

Ivor Wood – An Animated Celebration
A special screening of original episodes from Ivor Wood‘s career in British children’s television, including The Wombles, Postman Pat, Charlie Chalk and Paddington

A special screening of Barry’s films Next, Screen Play, Achilles, Plume and Tchaikovsky followed by an onstage Q&A with BFP Film Curator Joseph Wallace.

Barry Purves Masterclass
As part of the Bristol Festival of Puppetry programme for professionals and artists., Oscar and BAFTA-nominated animator/director Barry Purves will explore some of the creative techniques and skills involved in directing animation and puppetry on film.

Workshop: Stop-Mo on a Shoestring
Freelance model maker/animator, technical instructor at UWE and author of Get Started In Animation, Mary Murphy’s Bristol Festival of Puppetry workshop will guide you through the process of building a stop-motion puppet and filming it in action using affordable materials.

Additional Screenings
Curated by Joseph Wallace, Lightness (28th August, 3pm) and Darkness (31st August, 6pm) serve to showcase both the bright, positive side of puppet filmmaking as well as its ability to be dark and sombre. Featuring animated work from Mikey Please, Augusto Zanovello, Adam Elliot, Emma de Swaef and Marc James Roels amongst others.
Also playing throughout the first week of the festival is New Visions, a selection of fresh, standout student animation screenings, specially curated by Bristol-based Show Me The Animation and completely free. Each themed screening will run for thirty minutes (approx) and take place at the Tobacco Factory Theatre shows in a special pop-up cinema before the main events. Among the included filmmakers are Ainslie Henderson, Tim Reckart, Nina Gantz, Daisy Jacobs, Simon Cartwright and many more!
