Bean There, Done That – “In Your Arms” Jelly Bean Animation
I love jelly beans. Not the Liquorice ones obviously, they’re disgusting … but I have never considered their possibilities in the world of animation.
However, that’s what Greg Jardin, the director of the new music video for Kina Grannis decided he wanted to do. He wanted to take 2460 frames of animation and make them all in Jelly Beans (288,000 beans to be precise) . Not only that, he planned to take Miss Kina and have her lay down over the course of 22 months, make her lip sync her way through the song and act out moves in pixelation. Not since Peter Gabriel stepped through the doors of Aardman animations in 1986 to film “Sledgehammer” has an artist been involved in a video quite like this. The animation was achieved by creating the film in animatic form first and then projecting the frames on a panel and filling them in with the colourful beans. Over a quarter of a million Jelly Beans later and the video is complete. You can watch it in full below and then the making of video to see why the film has “bean” a long time in production.
