Bathroom Privileges is an award winning short animated documentary looking at some of the difficulties people face accessing public bathrooms. Stories of unexpected interactions and awkward moment. Funded by BFI Doc Society in 2019 and winner of the AHRC Research in Film Award.

Through a series of recorded interviews with contributors Dax (formerly known as Emma), Ben and Kemi, the public bathroom becomes a lens through which to view the experiences and testimonies of marginalised communities interacting with the wider world, People with disabilities, carers, women, people of colour and those who don’t conform to a gender binary.  Yet in a world that prizes fitting in, not being accepted by wider society, being told you are not welcome or do not belong can take its toll, restricting which spaces our contributors access and forcing them to deal with harassment in the most intimate of spaces.

The intention behind BP was to think about how to extend the awareness of who is marginalised from the public bathroom, to shine a light on the experiences of people who can’t access the public bathroom the way most take for granted. This is an issue that is made difficult by not only a lack of resources but also assumptions that everybody makes about people who don’t fit in and aren’t like them.
