BAFTA Scotland Wins for Isabella and No Place Like Home
BAFTA Scotland, the contingent of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts based north of the border last night revealed it’s 2016 winners at a glamorous red carpet event in Glasgow.
Whilst there is usually a singular award for animation, last night was noteworthy as it saw animator Ross Hogg take away the award for Short Film alongside his co-director Duncan Cowles for Isabella. The film is a mesmerising mixture of live action and animation that asks the question “How much of your life do you need to remember to remain yourself?” featuring Hogg’s 92 year old grandmother as the subject.
Known for his films such as Spectators and recently Scribbledub, Hogg won the BAFTA new talent in 2014 and has been nominated for a BAFTA four times in the last four years. Documentary film maker Cowles is perhaps best known for his films Directed by Tweedie and Radio Silence. When he isn’t focusing his attention on his documentary subjects he is also the voice of “Big Duncan” in many of the White Robot shorts.
The Animation award went to Cat Bruce for No Place like Home. “Under threat of imminent eviction from her countryside home, a self-reliant woman struggles to preserve her way of life.” Congratulations to everyone involved, it seemed like a great night for Scottish animation.
The full list of winners is available on the BAFTA Scotland website.
