Annecy 2012: Feature Film: Wrinkles
Set in a nursing home and exploring the mental decline of those suffering from Alzheimer’s you would be forgiven if a film such as this would not peak the interest of those wishing to see something more traditionally enjoyable. However with its sensitive dissection of a situation that the more sadly neglected and unfortunate members of society can find themselves in you may feel entertained and informed by this feature.
We mainly follow the story of Emilio, a former bank manager who finds the transition that comes with his mental decline a confusing and unwelcome experience. The situation is made worse when his son puts him in a nursing home when caring for him becomes too much. Enrico soon meets Miguel his Argentinian roommate who cons and swindles his way around the rest homes easily targeted residents. As Emilio’s personal belongings start going missing you find yourself turning against the shifty Miguel who remains a constant presence in the film. The film does take the opportunity to indulge in light hearted moments, a scene where the residents take part in gym exercises and a combination of sleeping old people and a randy old man trying his best to cop a feel of the young gym instructor, make a simple task of passing a ball across a room hilarious to watch. Its one of the moments of the film which slightly poke fun at the elderly but remain a good long way away from insulting them.
As Emilio’s condition deteriorates his relationship with Miguel develops and certain decisions and action lead to a mutual respect between the two that is key to some of the films heart-breaking final scenes. In all a sensitive subject approached and directed with the upmost respect for a subject matter that deserves everyone attention.
