ANNECY 2024: The Festival Trailers Celebrating Portugal

// Reviews (Festival)

One of the treats to look forward to every year at Annecy are the daily short trailers that precede each screening. Each year Gobelins produce the short idents that play on each day of the festival; usually to a predefined theme. This year’s shorts were weird, wonderful, bold, and beautiful – just what you would expect from a celebration of Portuguese culture and animation; which was the nation being celebrated this year.

Whether you were at Annecy or not this year, enjoy all of the films below, and let us know your favourite!

OUVE, MEO FILHO

On a cork oak farm deep in the village of Aldeia Velha, the warm Portuguese sun shines on the white walls of a family home. Life is sweet here for the members of the family, who cherish the moments they spend together. On this special day, the youngest daughter plants a cork oak shoot in their garden. She places in the ground symbolic objects inherited from each of her relatives.

It’s dark and cold. Between the surreal waves and the morning mist, glimmers of light emerge. The breeze rustles, tangles and stirs, enveloping the shore beneath its constant roar. And on the sand, a young man gazes deep into the waves…

The ocean has many faces: it offers food and work, is sometimes a playmate, sometimes a killer. In the fishing village of Nazaré, at the end of the 50s, the ocean assumes these different forms for each member of a modest family.

GLORIEUX EDEN

Lisbon, 1980, the city, the intensity, the chaos, the noise, the world. A young woman overwhelmed by the tumult seeks calm in the palace gardens of Sintra. Her red umbrella moves slowly under the pearly whiteness of the rising mist.

A SWEET TALE

A young woman opens an old recipe book and illustrations of nuns pop out of the pages. They come to life and help the young woman prepare convent pastries for her bakery.

AFTERPARTY

The sun rises over the city of Lisbon the day after its biggest festival, Santo Antonio. As citizens wake up and begin their day, the festival decorations come to life as they leave the city.

SILENCIO, QUE SE VAI CANTAR O FADO

A beautiful summer day, bread and wine on the table, it’s a Portuguese house.

The next edition of Annecy Animation Festival will return from 8th – 14th June 2025, where animation from Hungary will be in the spotlight.
