Annecy 2016 VR events announced
Annecy have this week announced three major VR-centric events as part of their 2016 line-up, showcasing the medium’s growing relationship with animation as a means of telling bold, envelope-pushing stories.
Google Spotlight Stories: Once upon a time in 360 (13/06/2016)
Taking place on Monday 6pm at the Salle Pierre Lamy will be a panel discussion featuring some of this exciting new storytelling medium’s current artists, hosted by Google Spotlight Stories Executive Producer Karen Dufilho, Google Creative Director Jan Pinkava. Amongst the ‘directors, pioneers and industry leaders’ providing insight into the creative process as related to VR are Felix Massie, Chris o’Reilly (Rain or Shine, Nexus Productions), Oscar-winning director Patrick Osborne (Pearl), Peter Lord and Tim Ruffle (Special Delivery, Aardman).
Creation Conference: The Challenges of Virtual Reality (14/06/2016)
Virtual reality has been getting a lot of attention recently, but how is it going to affect the evolution of the animation industry? Although virtual reality is currently creating quite a buzz, it is nonetheless faced with complex challenges that combine unprecedented difficulties in technical implementation, writing and broadcasting possibilities.
Aiming to present solutions and determine the long-term industry growth opportunities VR may provide, the four informational presentations (taking place from 2:30-6:15 pm at the Chambre de métiers) will be moderated by Thierry Barbier and feature Michel Nicolas (Folimage Studio), Chloé Jarry (Camera Lucida), Mark Davies, Felix Massie (Nexus Productions), Michel Bams (Happy IP), Catherine Cuenca (author, screenwriter), Jason Fletcher-Bartholomew, Tim Ruffle (Aardman) and Eric Darnell (Baobab Studios).

Festivalgoers can experience recent and upcoming projects firsthand at the Bonlieu’s “salle de création” on Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th:

On Thursday 16th the salle de création will also host a demonstration of Google’s 3D painting app Tilt Brush (Antonio Canobbio, Chris Prynoski, Drew Skillman and Patrick Hackett – Google VR)
