An Intense Training Programme to Tackle the Shortage of Animation Production Managers in the UK
In response to the current industry-wide shortage of animation production managers The Pipeline training hub is working with ScreenSkills to deliver a fantastic new training programme to help address the issue. The UK-wide five-weeks evening training programme is designed to offer current Production Coordinators the skills and confidence to move up into Production Management positions within animation.
The Pipeline is run by a team of industry specialists at the University of Salford developing courses across all professional levels with a focus on supporting underrepresented groups to contribute to the diversification of the Screen Industries.
They have partnered with expert producer and production manager Hannah Ferguson from Factory Create animation studios, who will deliver the training. Hannah’s expertise includes working on 2D, 3D and Stop Motion series and features for a range of clients.
The University of Salford have been higher education partners with the Manchester Animation Festival (MAF) for the past four years who also act as industry advisors on The Pipeline animation programmes.
Becoming an Animation Production Manager is supported by ScreenSkills, the industry-led skills body for the UK’s screen industries. This programme is funded through their animation skills fund with contributions from UK animation production companies.
The training programme is open to applicants across the UK regions and nations and is delivered on-line in discrete weekly sessions to aid skills development within the complex production management role and includes
It offers existing production coordinators within the animation sector the opportunity to undertake a rigorous course with tangible examples through real-world case studies supporting participants to build personal and professional skills and abilities to step up to the senior role. Individual learning plans will allow continuous reflection on skills as participants progress through the training sessions.
Becoming an Animation Production Manager is currently recruiting and is looking for applications from experienced Production Coordinators. There are 20 places available.

For animators looking to expand their skills and explore other areas of the creative screen industry the Pipeline are also running 2 VFX courses in Compositing and Matte Painting, designed to help those with transferable skills move into this exciting and fast-moving sector.
These 5-day online programmes, now open to applicants from across the UK will be delivered late March. The two courses Mastering the Artistry of Matte Painting & Mastering the Technique of Compositing offer skills for practitioners who have experience in related digital backgrounds (photography, art and design, environments, games etc) and those keen to build on existing skills gained through working within the VFX sectors. To support underrepresentation within the UK screen industries the 10 places on each course are being offered to disabled participants.
The Mastering the Artistry of Matte Painting course is designed for artists keen to immerse themselves in the world of matte painting producing a matte shot of their own by the end of the week to add to their portfolio. It covers each aspect if the matte painting pipeline and focusses on the design, compositional and lighting rules that are needed to tell the story. It will introduce participants to proprietary software used in industry and the tools and techniques to utilise them to achieve photorealistic quality in a final matte painting.
The Mastering the Technique of Compositing course looks at the fundamentals of contemporary compositing and understanding the VFX pipeline from rotoscoping through to integrating a final shot. Participants will be introduced to compositing software Nuke and the key facets of combining visual elements into single images and to Autodesk’s ShotGrid project management and tracking software which is revolutionising how workflows are streamlined within UK VFX and Post industries.
