Podcast interview with Alberto Mielgo (‘The Windshield Wiper’)
In our latest episode of Intimate Animation, our podcast series that explores animation that deals with adult themes of love, relationships and sexuality, we welcome special guest Alberto Mielgo.
Hailing from Spain and presently based in Los Angeles, Alberto has carved a name for himself through a series of high profile industry gigs that include work for Gorillaz, Harry Potter, Disney’s Tron Uprising (for which he won an Annie and Emmy award for production design) the video game Beatles Rockband and a stint on Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse.
Among Alberto’s most warmly-received projects is the Annie Award and triple Emmy-winning Love Death + Robots episode The Witness. On top of being a fan favourite, the episode would go on to win an Annie Award for Production Design and three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Short Form Animation Programme, Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation (Production Design – Alberto Mielgo) and Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation (Character Animation – David Pate).
More recently Alberto has teamed up with co-producer Leo Sanchez (Leo Sanchez Studio) to complete the short film The Windshield Wiper. Following its premiere last year at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, the film is currently nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the 2022 Academy Awards and addresses the question “What is love?” through a series of intimate, interwoven glimpses into people’s lives, brilliantly realised through the director’s appealingly unique and contemporary approach to CG character animation and environment design.
Also discussed in this episode: More on the British Animation Awards including award wins for previous Intimate Animation guests Renee Zhan, Anna Ginsburg and Caitlin McCarthy, love and sex-themed highlights from Miyu Distribution‘s new YouTube channel Bang Bang, the Manchester Animation Festival‘s new events strand MAF Presents (which kicked off last month with their love-themed screening They Love Me, They Love Me Not) and the return of Cardiff Animation Festival in April.
