Academy Blocks The Lego Movie
It’s that time of the year again where the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences select what they consider to be the best films of the past 12 months or so. Over 50,000 people tuned in online, ready to find out if their favourite films had a chance of grabbing the shining statuette. Now, every year there’s always one or two snubs that get people talking, and the Academy is no stranger to controversy but this year one particular film did not make the list in the Animated Feature category.
What was predicted by many film/animation sites to have been the frontrunner in the category and destined to bag the Oscar – The Lego Movie, wasn’t even nominated! Whilst this isn’t the first time the academy hasn’t chosen what many considered to have been one of the best films of the year, this is very perplexing considering the overwhelming amount of praise The Lego Movie has received since it’s release. When the nominations were announced you could literally hear the crowds present gasp with shock!
So how could this be? How can we go from being the frontrunner to not even being nominated? The Academy has been known for it’s poor attitudes towards animated films in the past and whilst there are only 5 films up for nomination, it can be hard to narrow it down to the best of the best. Twitter has had a lot to say about the snub, within half an hour of the results “The Lego Movie” and “Best Animated Feature” were trending worldwide just under #OscarNoms.
Elsewhere on the Twittersphere, The Lego Movie director’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller were calm and took to the news quite well.

"Lego Movie" trending.
"Dick Poop" also trending.#poetry— Phil Lord (@philiplord) January 15, 2015
(“Dick Poop” alluding the to the live mispronunciation of Dick Popes name during the ceremony)
Congrats to "Everything is Awesome" though currently the title of the song doesn't seem especially accurate!

Thanks all for the outpouring of love for the LEGO Movie today. We didn't make it for awards, we made it to be a trending topic on Twitter

As furious as the internet gets with these things there is no changing the situation. The Lego Movie did get a little recognition when “Everything is Awesome” was nominated for in the Original Song category. Either way, the nominations are in so here’s to February 22nd!
