Advent Animation 2014 – Dec 22: Double Feature of Christmas Contraptions (Sophie Klevenow) & (Blå Design)
Today we have a double feature on the theme of merry-making machines!
Above, Sophie Klevenow creates a delightful Rube Goldberg contraption powered by penguins to express her merry christmas wishes.
Interesting moment, fact or point of inspiration from your production:
The initial idea was to develop a simple Christmas-related gif to send out to clients and colleagues. Being quite obsessed with silly contraptions, I got somewhat carried away with it and before I knew it the whole thing had morphed into a one minute animation.
What special holiday treat would you bring to the Animator’s Holiday Potluck Party:
Plenty of gingerbread biscuits, Christmas stollen and a pineapple punch.
One favorite holiday memory from your childhood?
Skiing and sledding in the snow until half frozen, then defrosting on our grans’s tiled stove watching cartoons. Christmas bliss!
What’s one thing you are looking forward to in the new year?
There are some exciting projects, that I’m really looking forward to, and hopefully some fun collaborations with friends.
Next we have a stopmotion machine created by Blå Design that makes some very yummy looking gingerbread cookies. If only it pumped out Christmas beer as well!

Interesting moment, fact, or point of inspiration from your production:
Every year we do some sort of Christmas promo to thank our clients and remind them that we exist. It’s a good occasion to show creative work. We wanted to play with our visual identity – geometrical shapes and colors in red, yellow and green. This year we had this idea to combine a physical gift and a short film. We could give our clients homebaked gingerbreads in circular, rectangular and triangular shapes. And we would make a short film showing them how a creative agency would make them. I don’t think any of us knew the amount of work that goes into baking 80 gingerbreads in 14 x 14 cm size (we could only fit four at a time in the oven). Shooting the stopmotion was the easy part!
What special holiday treat would you bring to the Animator’s Holiday Potluck Party:
Certainly not gingerbreads – I’ve had it – at least for this season. I think I would bring some home brewed Christmas beer. Our photographer made a really nice one this Christmas.
One favorite holiday memory from your childhood?
Mmm – lots of them. One is animations. In Norway it’s a tradition to watch animations on Christmas Eve. Everything from Disney to local (Scandinavian) animations.
What’s one thing you are looking forward to in the new year?
Spending time with family and friends and enjoying films, books and records. And hopefully making more animations.
#AdventAnimation is a daily showcase of holiday themed animation. If you are working on something with a touch of holiday cheer that will be released sometime between 1 December and Christmas Eve, drop me a note and I will put it into consideration.
